Self Portrait

An art teacher once instructed, “You must do a self-portrait occasionally to keep yourself honest.” I have no idea what that means, but I’ve never forgotten it. On the left is a 10-minute sketch done while glancing back and forth continuously from mirror to paper. I look painfully stressed—probably from concentration. The right sketch was done in 1 minute using one line. I never lifted my pen while looking at my reflection, and glanced down at the paper only two or three times. Afterwards, I added a touch of watercolor to each for warmth. Very different results, and neither looks much like me—honestly. (click image to enlarge)

  1. Kimmie,

    Very, very good .. . ..

Except that you saw in yourself some sadness I’ve never seen

    Love you dearly,

    Dad
